  • On-board micro-controller

The Universal Conversion Engine provides data format conversion of digital, analog, serial, step, synchro, and resolver signals. These 4 inch x 4 inch modules are factory configurable to customer requirements for easy field installation. Applications include data acquisition of ownship heading, speed, pitch and roll; wind speed and direction monitoring; rudder angle indicator; antenna azimuth positioning; and many others.

The Universal Conversion Engine interfaces to NEMA-0183 message formats using RS-232, RS-422, RS-423, RS-485, or MIL-STD-188C protocols. This information is then converted to/from analog, step, digital, or synchro formats.
An optional LCD display provides visual monitoring of information and functions as a remote repeater.
  Synchro inputs/outputs: 90V and 11.8V, 0 - 20000 Hertz
Resolvers inputs/outputs: 6.8V, 0 - 20000 Hertz
Accuracy to +/- 2 arc minutes
  Serial message inputs/outputs: NMEA-0183
Serial protocol inputs/outputs: RS-232/422/423/485 or MIL-188C
Step inputs/outputs: 6 Step/degree, 12 Step/degree

BBG-2000
Overview
The BBG-2000 or Universal Conversion Engine (UCE) is a stand-alone module which interfaces to several types of analog and digital inputs outputs (I/O). An onboard micro-controller reads the input and can provide scaling or other manipulation of the input information. The micro-controller then writes the information to the output. The card can support any of its interfaces as an input or output of the card.. An optional LCD display enables display of raw or converted data.
During power up or reset, an onboard micro-controller reads the configuration switch that is used to select baud rate of the serial interface. The switch can also be used to select other features of the card. One switch might switch the data rate from a 1 to 10 Hertz output.
Example uses: radar systems (antenna azimuth), navigation systems gyrocompass, speedlog, course, pitch, and roll), industrial (position, velocity), and meteorological instruments(wind).

Serial
Format
Serial data interfaces use the standard National Marine Electronics Association (NMEA) message formats NMEA-0183 as shown below. This I/O is available in RS-232, RS-422, RS-423, RS-485, or MIL-STD-188C protocols. Standard output update rate is once per second. Custom serial data formats and frequencies are available upon request.
Serial baud rate selection and checksum checking is determined from the configuration switches at power up or reset. Selectable baud rates include:

1200, 2400, 4800, 9600, and 19,200 bits per second.

The default baud rate is 9600 and 8 bits, no parity, one stop bit (9600, 8, N, 1). Checksum validation is controlled by bit 2 of the configuration switch. Table 3 defines the switch position for the available baud rates and checksum validation.

NMEA-0183
Format
The UCE can be factory programmed for any NMEA-0183 data format. Default data format is following proprietary NMEA-0183 message:

$PTBBG,XXX.XX,A*CSCRLF

$ - Start of message (ASCII character 24 hex)
PT - Proprietary message
BBG - BBG Incorporated
XXX.XX - Angular information (ie. 45.01 degrees)
A - Validity ( A = valid, V = Invalid )
* - Checksum marker (ASCII character 24 hex)
CS - checksum (8 bit XOR of characters between the $ and * the checksum is inaccordance with NMEA-0183. The checksum is the converted to its ASCII value and represented in hexadecimal notation.
CR - Carriage return (ASCII 0D hex)
LF - Line feed (ASCII 0A hex)

Other standard formats include the HDT message, from the NMEA-0183 specification, with selectable update rates of 1 Hertz or 10 Hertz.
Synchro/Resolver
Interfaces
Synchro inputs are jumper selectable for synchro or resolver signals. The voltage can be configured by a simple chip and resistor replacement. Synchro and resolver inputs are fused and are transient protected. Standard Synchro input voltages are 90Vrms, 25Vrms, 11.8Vrms and custom inputs voltages available upon request. The required voltage for reference and line-to-line voltages must be specified at time of order. We have knowledgeable engineers on staff who can help in the determination of the required voltages.
Synchro or resolver outputs can be factory configured for any required voltage and frequency. The voltages required must be specified at time of order or quote. The synchro or resolver outputs can be powered from the reference or can be operated from external +/- 15Vdc power supplies.

Analog
Interfaces

The analog inputs are factory configurable for full scale ranges of -10V to +10V. Custom ranges are available upon request so please specify the desired voltage range when ordering.
The analog outputs are factory configurable for full scale ranges of -10V to +10V. Custom ranges are available upon request so please specify the desired voltage range when ordering.
